My boyfriend wants to know what I want for my birthday...how specific?

My boyfriend and I have always been big on surprise gifts, but I told him I wanted a locket for my birthday. Would it kill the fun or be boring to ask for a specific one? I really like it (although I would honestly like any locket), and it is probably a bit less expensive than one he would pick for me on his own. What do you think?
