Yes. Just stop going through your friends. He probably got freaked out by your friend who talked to him. He was probably caught by surprise and the "love" word early on freaks most people out. Also, it clearly didn't work for him to go through his friend. But his reaction shows that he really cares about the outcome of your feelings for each other. I say full speed ahead!
