Sterling silver locket leaves a dark mark?

I've had my locket for a few months now. It's real sterling silver. But just recently it's been leaving a dark mark on my chest, and when I rub it it goes away. I thought sterling silver wasn't supposed to leave marks? And is there anyway to prevent it? Thanks!
